All-Ireland Athletics Championships
Ursuline Intermediate team take the All-Ireland Overall Cup.

The All-Ireland Athletics Championships took place in Tullamore on Saturday 4 th June. While most of us were lazing around enjoying the sunshine, our athletes were working hard performing to their best in their respective events.

The day started early for Hayley Murphy when she competed in the Senior Long Jump at 10 a.m. She did very well to win the bronze medal. Then she had to wait until 4.15 to compete in the Senior Triple Jump. Hayley was leading coming into the last round of jumps but unfortunately was beaten into third spot. This was a very good performance for Hayley considering she was recovering from injury.

Our Intermediate team of athletes were competing as defending All-Ireland Champions of the Overall Intermediate Cup. Their defence got off to a great start at 12.30 with Kalyn Sheehan and Jessie Barr lining out for the start of the 300m hurdles. Kalyn ran a great race and won with Jessie in the silver medal position.

Mary O'Connor and Beth Walsh were competing in the 800m. They had to run in the heat of the day at 2 o'clock. Mary ran a controlled race staying on the shoulders of the leaders and captured the gold medal with a great finish. Beth got off to a bad start but got stronger as the race progressed and finished in a creditable fourth.

Jessie Barr and Sinead Donnelly both competed in the Triple Jump. Jessie took the gold and Sinead was unfortunate to be outside of the medals.

Kalyn went to the start for her second event of the day, the 80m hurdles and won gold very comfortably. Around 4.15 Kitty Walsh ran in the 1500m, a hard event in the heat, but this did not deter her. She worked doggedly and with 150 meters to go she was in sixth place. Kitty dug deep to move up trough the field and take the bronze medal.

The penultimate event of any race meeting is the relays. The Ursuline Intermediate Team of Grainne Quinn, Jessi Barr, Beth Walsh and Kalyn Sheehan put on a super performance. Their changes were very good and at the last changeover they were in joint third position. Kalyn with a powerful injection of pace in the last leg captured the gold on the line, in a photo finish.

The Ursuline Intermediate Team won the Intermediate Overall Cup for the second year in succession, a remarkable achievement for all the girls involved.
