Congratulations to the girls who participated in the Waterford Schools Badminton Competition. In the Girls under 19, Division Three, the school was represented by Evelyn Moran, Holly Hodgers, Olha Zhemerdhey and Bing Qing Liang, who were runners up. The school was also represented in the Girls under 16, Division 3 by Homya Bolla, Xue Mei Liang, Annabelle O’Grady Kennedy and Emma Smyth, who won their competition.

The following girls were also involved in Badminton throughout the year: Ciara Lehane, Tara Murphy, Susan Whelan, Orlaith Doyle, Kayleigh Haberlin, Jana Cox, Gráinne Flood and Connie Murphy.

Since 1999, there has been a Badminton Club in the school which takes place each Thursday afternoon from 5.00 pm to 6.00 pm in the Sports Hall. It is led by Ms Hayes and Fr. Conor Kelly. Originally aimed at members of Transition Year, it quickly became open to all students, and at present is made up of students from First Year up to Third Year.

The Club is intended for beginners in badminton, and emphasis is placed on basic shots like serving, clearing and dropping the shuttle, as well as the correct grip and footwork. We hold a number of internal competitions during the year, and also play against teams from Newtown School. We have also competed in the annual regional juvenile competitions. Although we only meet for one hour each week, the badminton club provides a welcome extension to the wide range of sports available in the school, and we would like to thank all the students who support it each week.
