Chess Club

The Chess Club was formed in April 2003, and meets once a week. It is open to all students from 1st to 6th year. You do not have to know how to play chess as we can teach you.

While we enter competitions the main emphasis is on having fun and making new friends. We hold knockout competitions regularly and enter the 'Secondary Checkmate' National Chess Championship. Last year we reached the second round and hope to do better this year.

Teachers and students are very welcome to join, we are always looking for new members.

This was the school’s first year to compete in inter-schools chess. Two teams of four were entered and qualified for the All-Ireland finals which took place in Limerick on Tuesday March 29th. We were the only school to have two teams qualify to the All-Ireland final stage.

The team made up of Teresa Langford (2nd year), Niamh McCarthy (1st year), Lorna Brosnan (3rd year) and Kayleigh Haberlin (3rd year) came 3rd. The team of Heather Wilson (1st year), Kelly Fitzgerald (1st year), Jennifer Hayes (1st year) and Aoife O’Neill (1st year) came 5th. The four reserves were Tara Neald (1st year), Catherine Kane (1st year), Katie O’Brien (4th year) and Eimear Mellor (4th year).

Teresa Langford performed exceptionally well and, as a result, finished 3rd overall.
