Public Speaking

Poetry Aloud 2011

This competition is run by Poetry Ireland & is open to verse-speakers in secondary schools from all over Ireland – from Kerry to Derry!

The Waterford centre was held in early October at St. Angela’s. We welcomed contestants from Dungarvan and Ring. There were 80 participants in total, seven students were chosen to go forward to the semi-finals which were held in early December at the National Library in Dublin.

The semi-finalists from St. Angela’s were:

Senior Category: Hazel Murray.

Intermediate: Keerthi Ramesh, Mide Power, Deirdre Delaney

Junior: Ciara Lehane, Carol-Anne DeLeCruz.

All performed really well although unfortunately non qualified for finals.

Each speaker recited two poems one by B.W. Yeats & a second free–choice piece.

Students are encouraged to develop their public speaking skills through Youth Leadership and Speech and Drama.

  • To improve the art of communication.
  • To encourage students to develop the skill to speak effectively and to articulate with clarity.
  • To develop self-confidence and and self-esteem.
