Raising of the Tricolour

A wonderful event took place in St. Angela’s on Friday, with a small ceremony honouring the Irish Flag and the importance of Waterford’s role in Irish history.

President Higgins presented the school with a flag during his recent visit to Waterford. Introduced by 4th Year student Nicole O’Rourke who received the flag, the Tricolour was raised by Ms. Connolly to the sounds of Amhrán na bhFiann in front of historic St. Joseph’s House. Present at the ceremony were some of Ursuline Sisters, staff and students. Ms. Crowley spoke of the wonderful Waterford archives which can be viewed in the Medieval Museum and referred to Thomas Francis Meaghar’s legacy in Waterford and for Irish at home and abroad, as we honour of flag. Ms. Crowley reminded those present that his hope was that the flag would always represent peace between communities, a sentiment which resonates today also.
